The best magnesium complex is the one whose label tells you how much elemental magnesium you get a day, which forms supply it, and how much of that comes from magnesium oxide. Of the seven complexes we checked on 23 October 2026, only two print the amount of every form on the label (ours and Nutravita), only two stay at or under the 350 mg US upper limit for supplemental magnesium at their full daily serving (ours at 329 mg and ESN at 323 mg), and the cheapest per milligram get most of their magnesium from oxide. If you want a fully disclosed multi-form label, choose Magnesium Seven; if you want the lowest cost without oxide, ESN Magnesium Complex (UK) and Micro Ingredients Triple Magnesium Complex (US) are the value picks.

Magnesium Seven from Love Life Supplements supplies 329 mg of elemental magnesium per 4-capsule serving, 47 mg from each of seven forms (orotate, taurate, lactate, malate, glycinate, citrate and Sucrosomial magnesium), plus 2 mg of vitamin B6 and 1 mg of manganese, in vegan HPMC capsules. A tub of 120 capsules is 30 servings and costs £38.95 on our UK store (£1.30 a day) or $53.02 on our US store ($1.77 a day); a Subscribe & Save first order is £35.06 or $47.72. An independent Eurofins test of batch 58449615 found lead and arsenic below 2.0 mg/kg, cadmium below 0.5 mg/kg and mercury below 0.010 mg/kg. Customers rate it 4.7 out of 5 on our store.

Quick takeaways
  • Count elemental magnesium, not compound weight. Nutravita's "1146mg Magnesium Complex" supplies 400 mg of magnesium; our 2,885 mg of magnesium compounds supply 329 mg. The elemental figure is the one to compare.
  • More forms is not the same as more magnesium. Sunday Natural lists 11 forms and BiOptimizers 7 or more, but neither prints how much each form supplies.
  • Check the oxide share. Oxide is the densest and cheapest form and is less well absorbed than citrate in several studies [1] [2]. In Nutravita's complex, roughly three quarters of the 400 mg comes from oxide by our calculation; in ours, 47 mg of 329 mg (14%) comes from Sucrosomial magnesium, which is magnesium oxide in a sucrosome coating.
  • Know the upper limit. The NIH sets 350 mg a day of supplemental magnesium as the US upper limit for adults, and the NHS says 400 mg or less a day from supplements is unlikely to cause harm. Four of the seven products go above 350 mg at their full serving.
  • Cheapest per 100 mg: Nutravita (4p) and Sunday Natural (7p) in the UK, Micro Ingredients ($0.06) in the US. Ours is the most expensive here at 39p ($0.54).

Best magnesium complex supplements compared: the label table

Seven multi-form magnesium supplements sold in the UK and the US, compared on each brand's own label facts. Every competitor figure was read from the brand's product page on 23 October 2026; where a page did not state a figure in its text, we say so rather than guess. Price per day uses the one-off price for one tub at the brand's suggested daily amount, and price per 100 mg divides that by the elemental magnesium per day.

Prices are one-off prices for one tub, read 23 October 2026, and exclude delivery and offers. Our UK Subscribe & Save first order is £35.06 (£1.17 a day) and our 3-Pack is £31.16 a tub (£1.04 a day); our US first subscription order is $47.72 ($1.59 a day). The oxide share of Nutravita's complex is our calculation from its listed 535 mg of magnesium oxide, which carries roughly 55 to 60% magnesium by weight, so about 290 to 320 mg of the 400 mg. Which magnesium complex is best for you?

It depends on whether you value a fully disclosed label, the lowest price, or a dose that stays under the upper limit, because no product in this group wins on all three. Here is how we would choose, with the bias that one of these is ours stated up front.

Pick by what matters most to you

Fully disclosed label, under the US upper limit

Magnesium Seven: 329 mg from seven forms at 47 mg each, all printed, plus B6. It is the most expensive per milligram in this table.

Lowest cost with no oxide (UK)

ESN Magnesium Complex: 323 mg from four forms, none of them oxide, for 53p a day. The per-form split is not printed in the page text.

Lowest cost with no oxide (US)

Micro Ingredients Triple Magnesium Complex: 400 mg from glycinate, malate and taurate for $0.25 a day, plus 120 mg of vitamin C. It is above the 350 mg US upper limit at three capsules.

Lowest price per milligram

Nutravita (17p a day) and Sunday Natural (28p a day at two capsules) are the cheapest, but oxide is the largest or second ingredient in both.

BiOptimizers Magnesium Breakthrough is the best known complex in the US and lists seven forms, but its label gives a 500 mg total without the split, which is 150 mg above the US upper limit for supplemental magnesium. We compared it with ours in detail in Magnesium Breakthrough alternative: Magnesium Seven compared.

Is a magnesium complex better than a single form?

Not automatically. A complex spreads its magnesium across several forms in one product, but no trial has shown that a blend of forms does more in people than a well-absorbed single form at the same elemental dose. The evidence on forms compares one form with another, mostly citrate, glycinate and oxide.

What the studies do show is that the form changes how much is absorbed. In a 1990 study, magnesium citrate was more soluble and better absorbed than magnesium oxide [1]. A 2003 randomised trial in 46 adults found the organic forms (citrate and an amino acid chelate) better absorbed than oxide over 60 days, with citrate giving the highest blood levels and oxide no different from placebo [2]. A 2001 study in volunteers measured about 4% fractional absorption from magnesium oxide, against significantly higher and similar absorption from magnesium chloride, lactate and aspartate [3]. And a 2019 study of 15 commercial magnesium products found very wide differences in how well they dissolved, with the best and worst predicted products also differing in blood levels in 30 people [4]. So a complex is only as good as its forms, its formulation and how much of each form it contains.

A complex makes sense if you want one product that covers several forms, for example glycinate alongside malate and citrate, rather than buying them separately. If you mainly want magnesium in the evening, a single-form glycinate is simpler and usually cheaper: our Magnesium Glycinate gives 303 mg of elemental magnesium per 4 capsules for 63p a day (£37.95 for 240 capsules) or $0.86 a day ($51.65) in the US. For a form-by-form view, see glycinate vs threonate vs taurate vs malate.

"When a client asks whether they need seven forms of magnesium, I start with what they want from it and what they already take. A complex suits someone who wants one all-round product, while a glycinate on its own is simpler if evenings are the focus. Either way, the total elemental magnesium on the label is the first number I check."

How do you read a magnesium complex label?

Look for three numbers: the elemental magnesium per daily serving, the amount supplied by each form, and the number of capsules it takes to get there. Everything else on the front of the tub is marketing.

  1. Elemental magnesium, not compound weight. Magnesium compounds are mostly the partner molecule. Our 714 mg of magnesium orotate supplies 47 mg of magnesium; 535 mg of magnesium oxide supplies roughly 290 to 320 mg. A label that leads with "1146mg" or "2,885 mg" of complex is quoting compound weight.
  2. The split between forms. If a label lists seven forms but only one total, you cannot tell whether the expensive forms are a meaningful share or a sprinkle. Proprietary blends are legal in both markets; they just give you less to go on.
  3. Where the oxide sits. Ingredients are listed in descending order of weight. Oxide first or second usually means it supplies most of the magnesium, because it is the densest form.
  4. Capsules per day. Gentler organic forms are bulkier, so 300 mg or more usually takes three or four capsules. Two capsules delivering 400 to 500 mg is a hint that a dense form is doing much of the work.
  5. Extras you may already take. Vitamin B6, vitamin C and manganese are common additions; add them to any multivitamin you take.

How much magnesium should a complex give you a day?

For most adults, a complex that supplies 200 to 350 mg of elemental magnesium a day, taken with food, sits within the UK and US guidance for supplements. The reference intakes below cover total magnesium from food and supplements; the upper limits apply to supplements only.

Nutrient UK reference US reference (NIH ODS) Magnesium Seven per serving
Magnesium NRV 375 mg (labelling); NHS: 300 mg a day for men, 270 mg for women aged 19 to 64; 400 mg or less a day from supplements unlikely to cause harm RDA 400 to 420 mg men, 310 to 320 mg women; UL 350 mg a day from supplements 329 mg (88% NRV)
Vitamin B6 NRV 1.4 mg; NHS: 1.4 mg men, 1.2 mg women; 200 mg or more a day can affect nerves RDA 1.3 mg (ages 19 to 50), up to 1.7 mg; UL 100 mg 2 mg
Manganese NRV 2 mg; NHS: 4 mg or less a day from supplements unlikely to cause harm (0.5 mg for older people) AI 2.3 mg men, 1.8 mg women; UL 11 mg 1 mg
Vitamin C (in two competitors) NRV 80 mg RDA 90 mg men, 75 mg women; UL 2,000 mg None

Sources: Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 Annex XIII as retained in Great Britain [5]; NHS vitamins and minerals pages [6] [7]; NIH Office of Dietary Supplements fact sheets [8] [9] [10]. The NRV is a labelling reference, not a personal target. The US upper limit for magnesium covers supplements and medicines only, not food.

Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, to normal muscle function and to normal psychological function. The most common side effect of too much supplemental magnesium is loose stools or diarrhoea, which is why the limits apply to supplements: the NHS notes that more than 400 mg for a short time can cause diarrhoea [6]. At their full daily serving, BiOptimizers (500 mg), Nutravita, Micro Ingredients and Sunday Natural at two capsules (400 mg each) sit above the 350 mg US limit; ours (329 mg) and ESN (323 mg) sit below it. One capsule of Sunday Natural (200 mg) also sits below it.

If you take magnesium from more than one product, such as an electrolyte drink or a multivitamin, add them together. People with kidney disease should not take magnesium supplements without medical advice, and magnesium can reduce the absorption of some antibiotics and bisphosphonates if taken at the same time; our guide to who should not take magnesium covers the interactions.

"I ask clients to add up every source of magnesium before they buy: the complex, any electrolyte drink, a multivitamin, even a sleep blend. It is easy to pass 400 mg a day without noticing. Magnesium contributes to normal muscle function and to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, but more is not better, and loose stools are usually the first sign that the dose is too high."

Does it matter if a magnesium complex contains oxide?

It matters for how much of the stated dose you are likely to absorb and for your stomach, so it is worth knowing how much oxide a complex relies on. Oxide is about 60% magnesium by weight, which makes it the cheapest way to reach a high number on a label, but it dissolves poorly and was absorbed less well than citrate in the studies above [1] [2] [3]. Unabsorbed magnesium stays in the gut and draws in water, which is why oxide is also used as a laxative.

A small share of oxide in a complex is not a problem in itself. In Magnesium Seven, the oxide is Sucrosomial magnesium, a branded form in which magnesium oxide is coated in a sucrester and phospholipid matrix, and it supplies 47 mg of the 329 mg. In Nutravita's complex, 535 mg of magnesium oxide is the largest single ingredient, so it supplies most of the 400 mg by our calculation, and Sunday Natural lists oxide second. ESN, Micro Ingredients and BioEmblem list no oxide at all.

Why do some complexes add vitamin B6, vitamin C or manganese?

Usually to round out the formula rather than to change how the magnesium works. Vitamin B6 contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue and to normal psychological function, and manganese contributes to the maintenance of normal bones and to normal energy-yielding metabolism. Our 2 mg of B6 and 1 mg of manganese sit well inside the NHS and NIH limits in the table above.

One trial is often quoted for magnesium with B6: in 2018, Pouteau and colleagues gave 264 adults with low blood magnesium and high stress-scale scores either 300 mg of magnesium with 30 mg of vitamin B6 or 300 mg of magnesium alone for eight weeks. Both groups' scores fell by a similar amount, with no significant difference between them overall; in the 162 people with the highest scores at the start, the authors reported a 24% greater fall with the B6 combination [11]. That is one single-blind, industry-funded trial in a selected group, using fifteen times the 2 mg of B6 in our complex, so we read it as a reason B6 is a common partner, not as a promise of any effect. Vitamin C in the Sunday Natural and Micro Ingredients complexes comes from magnesium ascorbate or a separate vitamin C ingredient; it adds to any vitamin C you already take.

What does a magnesium complex cost per day?

Between 17p and £1.30 a day in the UK and between $0.25 and $1.77 a day in the US, for the products in our table at their full serving. Per 100 mg of elemental magnesium, the range is 4p to 39p in the UK and $0.06 to $0.54 in the US.

Per-day figures are rounded to the nearest penny or cent. Our US first subscription order is 10% off and later orders $45.07; our UK later subscription orders are £33.11. Prices change; the live price box on this page reads our current price from the store.

Ours costs more per milligram than every competitor here. What the extra pays for is seven organic and Sucrosomial forms at a printed 47 mg each, a dose under the US upper limit, B6 and manganese, and batch testing you can read. If price per milligram is your main test, the cheaper complexes above do the job, and the label table shows what each one trades for its price.

How we test Magnesium Seven

Every batch arrives with a manufacturer's certificate of analysis, and we also send samples to an independent laboratory. Our figures below come from batch 58449615, manufactured in the UK on 29 August 2025.

Test Result Source

The label states 329 mg of magnesium in 4 capsules, which is about 12% of the 2,708 mg of powder in four 677 mg fills, or about 10% of four whole capsules including the shell. The laboratory's 11.0% sits within its own stated uncertainty of either figure, so the result is consistent with the label. Certificates for this and earlier batches are in our testing procedures and lab results library.

Where Magnesium Seven is not the best choice

  • If price per milligram is what matters most. Nutravita, Sunday Natural, ESN and Micro Ingredients all cost less per 100 mg.
  • If you want fewer capsules. Our serving is four capsules; ESN and Micro Ingredients need three, Nutravita and BiOptimizers two.
  • If you only want magnesium for the evening. A single-form glycinate, ours or another brand's, gives a similar elemental dose for less.
  • If you are pregnant, breastfeeding or under 18. Our label says it is not suitable for pregnant or lactating mothers or anyone under 18.

For the wider field, including single-form options, see our best magnesium supplement guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best magnesium complex supplement?

The best magnesium complex states the elemental magnesium per day, the amount from each form, and how much comes from oxide. Of the seven we checked on 23 October 2026, Magnesium Seven (329 mg from seven forms at 47 mg each, all printed on the label) and ESN Magnesium Complex (323 mg from four forms, no oxide) stay under the 350 mg US upper limit for supplemental magnesium. Micro Ingredients Triple Magnesium Complex is the lowest cost US option without oxide at $0.25 a day.

Is it better to take a magnesium complex or a single form?

Neither is proven better at the same elemental dose: no trial has compared a multi-form blend with a single well-absorbed form. A complex suits you if you want several forms such as glycinate, malate and citrate in one product. If you mainly want magnesium in the evening, a single-form glycinate is simpler and usually costs less per day.

Can I take a magnesium complex every day?

Yes, magnesium complexes are designed for daily use at the label dose. Keep your total from supplements at or under 350 mg a day, the US upper limit set by the NIH, or 400 mg, the level the NHS says is unlikely to cause harm, and add any magnesium from electrolyte drinks or multivitamins. Check with a doctor first if you have kidney disease or take regular medication.

When is the best time to take a magnesium complex?

Take it with food at whatever time you will remember, because consistency matters more than timing. Many people split a four-capsule serving into two with breakfast and two with the evening meal, which also helps if your stomach is sensitive. Leave a gap of a few hours between magnesium and antibiotics or bisphosphonates.

What is a magnesium complex good for?

A magnesium complex is a way to top up magnesium from several forms in one product. Magnesium contributes to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue, normal muscle function, normal psychological function, electrolyte balance and the maintenance of normal bones. Adding several forms does not give magnesium any extra function beyond these.

Does a magnesium complex have side effects?

The usual side effect is loose stools or diarrhoea, which becomes more likely at higher doses and with forms such as oxide that are poorly absorbed. The NHS notes that more than 400 mg for a short time can cause diarrhoea. Splitting the dose and taking it with food usually helps; stop and seek advice if you feel unwell.
